Ilfracombe Town Crest Restoration
In 2026, I was commissioned by Ilfracombe Town Council to restore the town’s mosaic crest.
Measuring about a metre across and set into a substantial concrete base, the crest has been exposed to the North Devon weather for many years. Time has taken its toll, with areas of the mosaic becoming worn, damaged and lost.
My task is to conserve as much of the original work as possible while carefully replacing missing and damaged pieces. The aim is not to make it look newly made but to restore its colour, clarity and character while respecting the history held within it.
As someone who grew up locally and has now returned to make Ilfracombe home, it is a real privilege to help care for this familiar piece of the town’s identity.
I’ll be documenting the restoration here as the work progresses.
